DEPARTMENTAL NOTICES: Courses numbered 300 and 400 are, unless individually designated, designed for all students with sophomore standing and above. Freshmen and those with other preparation should seek permission of the instructor. Certain courses numbered 39XX are designated "writing intensive." They constitute the basic introduction to good history writing for undergraduates, and one is required for graduation for the class of 2004 and thereafter. Courses above 400 are open to graduate students. Courses numbered 4890-4999 are designated advanced seminars with limited enrollments. They are required of juniors in the honors program in history, and satisfy the capstone experience requirement, but are open to all students with junior standing and above, and to graduate students. In all cases they require permission of the instructor. Courses numbered above 500 are intended only for graduate students, and in all cases require permission of the instructor.
