T64 CNST 530Solar Decathlon 2017: Constructing & Materializing Assemblies3.0 Units
Description:This summer course will focus on the construction phase of the Solar Decathlon house. Based on the conceptual design developed in F15 and further refinement performed in SP16, F16 and SP17, the students will actively participate in the construction and materialization of the project. The WU Solar Decathlon project will be constructed this spring 2017. Consequently, this course provides students an opportunity to intensify their understanding of design/constructability issues by active participation in the project realization, and interaction with industry professionals. Students enrolled will learn the applicable fundamentals of construction systems while achieving a solid background on principles of prefabrication design, including precast concrete and light gauge steel technologies. Students will learn the methodology of prefab construction systems, including theories and concepts of prefabrication, real-world applications, common dimensions, manufacturing process, material and physical properties, assemblies, transportation, environmental performance and general design issues. Students will participate in meetings with consultants, which are involved in the building's materialization. Students will experience methods and procedures of executing prefabricated building enclosure and interior components, which will be manufactured by students with the help of faculty and key industry partners in this project. Students will participate in the installation of the plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems and PV panels' technologies. The team will be interacting with Barry Greenberg, architect of record and principal at Architectural Design Guild (ADG), a local architectural firm that will help the team with the architectural, structural and mechanical systems of the project. The firm will also assist the team with revision of the construction documents. Roy Wall, the project's structural engineer, will be working closely with us.

Home/Ident

A course may be either a “Home” course or an “Ident” course.

A “Home” course is a course that is created, maintained and “owned” by one academic department (aka the “Home” department). The “Home” department is primarily responsible for the decision making and logistical support for the course and instructor.

An “Ident” course is the exact same course as the “Home” (i.e. same instructor, same class time, etc), but is simply being offered to students through another department for purposes of registering under a different department and course number.

Students should, whenever possible, register for their courses under the department number toward which they intend to count the course. For example, an AFAS major should register for the course "Africa: Peoples and Cultures" under its Ident number, L90 306B, whereas an Anthropology major should register for the same course under its Home number, L48 306B.
