M65 Peds 915Newborn and Pediatric Critical Care Advanced Clinical Rotation (ACR)0.0 Unit
Description:Students fill the role of a subintern in critical care medicine of the pediatric patient, from birth through teenage years.

The rotation will take place both in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at SLCH. The student will be a part of a team of providers made up of an attending, fellow, residents and nurse practitioners. Students will work for 2 weeks in the NICU and 2 weeks in the PICU, where the schedule will mimic that of the residents; in the NICU this will include every 4th day being a long day (until 7 pm) and in the PICU this will include one week of days and one week of nights. In the NICU students will be expected to follow 4-6 patients depending on acuity. In the PICU students will be expected to follow 3-4 patients depending on acuity. Students will have their patients cross covered with a senior resident. In addition to refining their understanding of physiology and pathophysiology students will develop communication skills with both families, ancillary staff, consulting services and community providers.

Critical care of the pediatric patient is an important part of training for anyone interested in caring for children in their careers. This rotation will offer students the opportunity to be an integral part of the care of these children and their families.

Home/Ident

A course may be either a “Home” course or an “Ident” course.

A “Home” course is a course that is created, maintained and “owned” by one academic department (aka the “Home” department). The “Home” department is primarily responsible for the decision making and logistical support for the course and instructor.

An “Ident” course is the exact same course as the “Home” (i.e. same instructor, same class time, etc), but is simply being offered to students through another department for purposes of registering under a different department and course number.

Students should, whenever possible, register for their courses under the department number toward which they intend to count the course. For example, an AFAS major should register for the course "Africa: Peoples and Cultures" under its Ident number, L90 306B, whereas an Anthropology major should register for the same course under its Home number, L48 306B.
