M65 Peds 910Pediatrics Advanced Clinical Rotation (ACR)140.0 Units
Description:This is the general inpatient pediatric ACR. The student will be assigned to one of three inpatient pediatric floor teams at St. Louis Children's Hospital (10-100/green, 11-100/yellow, or gold teams). They will follow patients from initial evaluation through discharge. Students will be paired with an alternating intern under the supervision of the senior resident but are expected to manage their own patients. Teaching rounds are conducted by the faculty. With supervision, students will be expected to preround on their patients, present on rounds, perform daily tasks including calling consults, PMDs, writing orders (to be cosigned), write notes (to be cosigned), and participate in handoffs. Students will spend 3 weeks on day shifts and 1 week on night shifts.

The elective will provide experience in the management of many pediatric medical conditions (variable depending on floor) and will include the care of patients with various diseases including but not limited to pulmonary, infectious diseases, gastrointestinal, renal, endocrine, neurological, and rheumatologic issues. Other common conditions include failure to thrive, ingestions, and fever of unknown origin.

Home/Ident

A course may be either a “Home” course or an “Ident” course.

A “Home” course is a course that is created, maintained and “owned” by one academic department (aka the “Home” department). The “Home” department is primarily responsible for the decision making and logistical support for the course and instructor.

An “Ident” course is the exact same course as the “Home” (i.e. same instructor, same class time, etc), but is simply being offered to students through another department for purposes of registering under a different department and course number.

Students should, whenever possible, register for their courses under the department number toward which they intend to count the course. For example, an AFAS major should register for the course "Africa: Peoples and Cultures" under its Ident number, L90 306B, whereas an Anthropology major should register for the same course under its Home number, L48 306B.
