S60 SWCD 5420Interprofessional Practice in Hospice and Palliative Care3.0 UnitsLab Required
Description:This course supports students in acquiring the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to collaborate with colleagues from diverse professional backgrounds to provide high-quality, person- and family-centered care to individuals and families living with or affected by serious illnesses. Preparation is provided for practice with patients and families across the life course in a broad range of settings including acute care hospitals, outpatient clinics, nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, inpatient hospice settings, and private residences. The course primarily focuses on care provided within the U.S. healthcare system. Students wishing to learn more about international hospice and palliative care are encouraged to do so by completing optional readings and/or by choosing related topics for assigned class papers or projects. This course emphasizes knowledge and skill development in three broad areas: (1) interprofessional collaboration, (2) communication, and (3) evidence-based, culturally-responsive biopsychosocial and spiritual care. Assessment of learning will be based on direct observation of practice skills in addition to evaluation of more traditional academic products such as papers and presentations. Students are strongly encouraged to review the course outline and thoughtfully consider their readiness to engage with the planned content. Those with recent or unaddressed experiences or trauma related to serious illness or injury, death and dying, or grief and loss may wish to postpone enrolling in the course. Students are encouraged to email the course instructor if they have specific questions or would like to discuss their potential participation in the course.

Home/Ident

A course may be either a “Home” course or an “Ident” course.

A “Home” course is a course that is created, maintained and “owned” by one academic department (aka the “Home” department). The “Home” department is primarily responsible for the decision making and logistical support for the course and instructor.

An “Ident” course is the exact same course as the “Home” (i.e. same instructor, same class time, etc), but is simply being offered to students through another department for purposes of registering under a different department and course number.

Students should, whenever possible, register for their courses under the department number toward which they intend to count the course. For example, an AFAS major should register for the course "Africa: Peoples and Cultures" under its Ident number, L90 306B, whereas an Anthropology major should register for the same course under its Home number, L48 306B.
