A46 ARCH 5335From the Inside Out: Public Health & the Built Environment3.0 Units
Description:Welcome to our course examining the impact of the built environment on health outcomes and how to make healthy places. We will use a transdisciplinary approach to explore how factors such as land use, community design, and transportation systems play a pivotal role in shaping individual well-being. Throughout this course, we will analyze how decisions within the built environment directly and indirectly affect health outcomes. Numerous systems combine and enact a toll on health. From water and air pollution increasing the risk of infectious illness to community design influencing the longer-term risk of developing certain chronic diseases, we will consider how built environment decisions can impact the health of individuals of varied ages, abilities, races, and ethnicities. Course participants will delve into the policy and decision-making processes guiding changes in the built environment. Additionally, we will explore the co-benefits associated with prioritizing health in these domains, recognizing positive outcomes beyond direct health impacts. To apply our understanding, course participants will collaborate in groups, conducting a fast Health Impact Assessment in St. Louis. This exercise will culminate in a presentation at the end of the course. Prerequisite or corequisite for MPH Program Students: S55-5005 or permission of instructor.

Home/Ident

A course may be either a “Home” course or an “Ident” course.

A “Home” course is a course that is created, maintained and “owned” by one academic department (aka the “Home” department). The “Home” department is primarily responsible for the decision making and logistical support for the course and instructor.

An “Ident” course is the exact same course as the “Home” (i.e. same instructor, same class time, etc), but is simply being offered to students through another department for purposes of registering under a different department and course number.

Students should, whenever possible, register for their courses under the department number toward which they intend to count the course. For example, an AFAS major should register for the course "Africa: Peoples and Cultures" under its Ident number, L90 306B, whereas an Anthropology major should register for the same course under its Home number, L48 306B.
