ANTHROPOLOGY (L48)  (Dept. Info)Arts & Sciences  (Policies)SU2018

L48 Anthro 4179On Location: Portland Beyond Portlandia: Creative Cities and the New Economy3.0 Units
Description:This on-location course investigates the creative culture and new forms of work and enterprise that are associated with urban change and economic development in American cities today. The course focuses on Portland, Oregon, a city at the forefront of a national trend affecting many urban centers - from Brooklyn to Detroit, Nashville to Austin. In Portland, as in other cities, the emergence of a class of artisan entrepreneurs is driving population growth, demographic recomposition, and gentrification, including the displacement of working class and immigrant groups and people of color from central neighborhoods. Over the course of two weeks spent in Portland, the course will cover topics including urban planning, the maker movement, critical perspectives on ethics and entrepreneurship, race and urban space, hipster aesthetics and whiteness, gender and the changing meanings of work and labor in America. These topics will be explored via guided tours, field visits, and conversations with business owners, practitioners, and local experts in addition to readings and classroom discussions. Incorporating qualitative methods from cultural anthropology such as interviews and participant observation, this course provides an introduction into strategies for research in interpretative social sciences and the humanities and trains students in contemporary thinking in the field of urban anthropology. Interested Individuals will need to complete an application and submit it by February 1, 2018. Those selected to participate in this program will receive full tuition remission for the course and American Culture Studies will cover the majority of travel costs associated with this class. Home/Ident

A course may be either a “Home” course or an “Ident” course.

A “Home” course is a course that is created, maintained and “owned” by one academic department (aka the “Home” department). The “Home” department is primarily responsible for the decision making and logistical support for the course and instructor.

An “Ident” course is the exact same course as the “Home” (i.e. same instructor, same class time, etc), but is simply being offered to students through another department for purposes of registering under a different department and course number.

Students should, whenever possible, register for their courses under the department number toward which they intend to count the course. For example, an AFAS major should register for the course "Africa: Peoples and Cultures" under its Ident number, L90 306B, whereas an Anthropology major should register for the same course under its Home number, L48 306B.
