Desc: | OBJECTS OF DESIRE. This class considers objects as essential elements to stories of ambition, seduction, and obsession. From magical fountains, through secret passages, and including mysterious letters that fall from one pocket into the hands of those whose lips are never sealed, objects tell the story of love, conquest, and beauty. Narrating tales of individual desire, authors rely on objects for their supernatural powers, their value as commodities, and as sources of pleasure. We will consider prized possessions as well as women forced to sell their bodies. In such a world does a book, a fantasy, or an idea hold more promise? Works to include Chrétien de Troyes, YVAIN; Marguerite de Navarre, L'HEPTAMERON [extracts], Lafayette, LA PRINCESSE DE CLEVES; Graffigny, LETTRES D'UNE PERUVIENNE; Flaubert, MADAME BOVARY [extracts]; Proust, COMBRAY [extracts]; and Toussaint, LA SALLE DE BAIN.
