This course is designed to introduce students to the history and teachings of one of the world's major religious traditions: Confucianism. We will examine how Confucianism developed in ancient China and afterwards spread throughout East Asia and beyond. In particular, we will pay attention to the issue of ritual and how Confucians attempted to ritualize social interactions and the world at large. In order to do so, we will engage in the writings of Confucius, Mengzi, and Xunzi, three early Chinese writers whose basic ideas about ritual heavily informed myriad cultural practices that are formative for large portions of East Asia today. Hence, this course on ancient thinkers not only introduces thoughts and practices prevalent throughout pre-modern China, Japan, and Korea. It also functions as a catalyst that helps us understand some of the reasons and motivations behind these communities' recent efforts to renegotiate and question "the colonialist flavor" of human rights and democracy.

China is a country with a large population, diverse landscapes, and unique food. This course will explore the origins of Chinese food in the context of the formation of Chinese societies. During the last two decades, the archaeology of China has become a fast moving subject with advances in methods, theories and changes of key perceptions. In this context, the beginning and spread of food production in China has become one of the key questions in current archaeology. We will focus on the process of domestication of plants and animals in various regions of China during the Holocene. We will explore how those processes relate to other sectors of the Old World, such as those of South and Southwest Asia. This course will pursue answers to the following questions: Why the Chinese ways of living and eating are different from those in the West? How production and consumption in China were shaped by food globalization in prehistory?

Stranger Things: Tales of the Supernatural in Chinese Literature

Ghosts and supernatural creatures haunt some of the earliest works of Chinese literature. New 'tales of the strange' were perpetually being written while old ones were retold, continually adapted for different genres and audiences. These tales have had a lasting impact, and inspire movies and comic books in China even today. We will read such influential texts as the 4th century In Search of the Supernatural and the 18th century collection Strange Tales from the Studio of Leisure. Following these stories in their various reincarnations to the present day, we will examine their adaptations in modern popular culture, including films such as Mural (2011) and The Assassin (2015). In addition to close reading and interpretation, we will situate these works in their social and cultural contexts alongside critical and theoretical readings on supernatural and science fiction. No background in Chinese language or literature required.

This course traces the history of China over the course of the nineteenth century, with an emphasis on social and cultural history. This was one of the most tumultuous centuries in Chinese history, during which China faced threats from abroad in the form of Western and Japanese imperialism, and from within, in the form of environmental degradation and rebellions resulting in an unprecedented loss of human life. The nineteenth century has thus often been portrayed as a period of sharp decline for China. At the same time, we will explore the ways in which the origins of the dynamic society and economy found in China today, as well as the worldwide influence of overseas Chinese, can be traced to this century of turmoil. Writing from the Periphery: The Question of Chineseness

In this course, we will read a broad range of literary works written by ethnic Chinese from various parts of the world. We will examine the notion of "Sinophone," primarily its implications to the challenge of cultural identity formation to those Chinese who are not traditionally identified as "Chinese" because of war, migration, immigration, colonialism, among others. We will also examine the meaning of being on the margins of geopolitical nation-states. Finally we will discuss the notions of hybridity and authenticity vis-à-vis literary representation. We will read works by ethnic Chinese writers from the United States, France, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Mongolia, Tibet, and so on. This course is limited to seniors and graduate students only. All readings will be available in English. 3 units. Active class participation is required.

This hybrid Chinese language-literature course is designed to meet the needs of students who have taken at least five years of Chinese language courses (including classical Chinese) and are interested in exploring Chinese language and culture in more depth by studying early modern Chinese vernacular short stories. The stories are selected from the Three Words (Sanyan), the renown three story collections by Feng Menglong, one of the most accomplished authors of vernacular fiction in the seventeenth-century China. The vernacular language in these stories is grammatically similar to modern Chinese, but is charged with the vocabulary of the time and interspersed with classical Chinese verses and expressions. Studying these stories will allow students to appreciate modern grammar while discerning the development of vernacular Chinese over the centuries. Prerequisite: Five years of modern Chinese language and at least one semester of classical Chinese are required; background in Chinese literature and civilization are welcome.

Methods and Materials for Research on Early Modern China

This seminar provides an introduction for graduate students to the methods and materials used in conducting research on early modern (or late imperial) China. Lectures, discussions, and exercises will present fundamental paradigms and problems specific to the study of early modern China, as well as familiarizing students with the vast body of print and web-based research tools necessary to work with original texts in Chinese. We will also explore how social, cultural, and literary historians have used various texts in their scholarly works. Students will be encouraged to use the course to pursue individual research interests as they explore the broader contexts, approaches, and questions central to the study of early modern China and introduces graduate students to important recent scholarly literature on the history of early modern (essentially Ming and Qing) Chinese history.
