L83 Russ St 402The Meaning of National Security in the 21st Century3.0 Units
Description:This seminar will examine how national security concerns are understood by three world powers in the twenty-first century: the U.S., China, and India. During the semester, students will work in three teams representing the U.S., PRC, and India. Each team will research and represent their country's position before coming together for debate. In addition to WU faculty, colleagues from Fudan University in Shanghai and Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi will visit to give presentations during the semester. The course curriculum is also divided into three general clusters: for the first month, we will focus on the role of nuclear weapons and "hard power" in national security; the second month will broaden the scope with nontraditional security issues and the "soft power" of these three nations; the final third will focus on how the perspectives of these three powers come into contact and conflict, culminating in a security "crisis simulation" with all three teams. Finally, after completing the course in spring semester, students will have the option of participating in a working meeting in Shanghai, May 27-29, 2016. Faculty members and students from Washington University, Fudan University, and JNU will participate in this conference. Enrollment in the course is limited, and preference will be given to students who participate in the Shanghai conference. INSTRUCTOR PERMISSION IS REQUIRED TO ENROLL IN THE COURSE.

Home/Ident

A course may be either a “Home” course or an “Ident” course.

A “Home” course is a course that is created, maintained and “owned” by one academic department (aka the “Home” department). The “Home” department is primarily responsible for the decision making and logistical support for the course and instructor.

An “Ident” course is the exact same course as the “Home” (i.e. same instructor, same class time, etc), but is simply being offered to students through another department for purposes of registering under a different department and course number.

Students should, whenever possible, register for their courses under the department number toward which they intend to count the course. For example, an AFAS major should register for the course "Africa: Peoples and Cultures" under its Ident number, L90 306B, whereas an Anthropology major should register for the same course under its Home number, L48 306B.
