We will also discuss a series of theoretical readings that discuss immigration in Europe, Latin America, and the US, and explore questions pertaining to border-crossing, displacement, and exile in different historical periods and in diverse geographical contexts. The course will simultaneously provide analytical and methodological tools in order to analyze cultural production. |

In this course, we will study a selection of contemporary written and visual representations of three crucial periods of Spain's history, when there have been the most significant differences and disagreements among its inhabitants in terms of religion, politics, culture and moral values: The medieval times, when the Muslim, Christian and the Jewish people lived together in the Iberian Peninsula; the nineteenth century, with its political disagreements between liberals and conservatives; and the twentieth century, with its "second Republic," the Spanish Civil War, its sequels during the Francoist years, and the transition to democracy after Franco's death in 1975. As we analyze and discuss these representations, we will try to understand how these historical periods have contributed to give shape to twentieth-century Spain. |

In the past three decades, Mexican literature has seen the emergence of a generation of young and not so young writers who seek to break the literary conventions by invoking genres such as science fiction, STEAMPUNK, crime fiction or fantasy, as well as foms of writing such as the graphic novel and the urban chronicle. This course seeks to explore this production in relation to the increasing penetration of neoliberalism and the US imagination in contemporary Mexican culture in the context of the growing decline of nationalism. The class will specifically address authors working on science fiction, journalism, comics, drug dealer/border stories, experimental fiction, punk and goth literature, fiction about the Nazis, apocalyptic narratives, fantasy worlds, Orientalist recreations and other categories of this new way of understanding literature. This is a writing-intensive course, which requires a minimum of 3 papers of approx. 4-5 pp. length, with rewrites; 50% of the grade must come from written work. |

This major seminar will focus on how contemporary literature produced in Spain offers different responses to the notion and historical experience of "crisis." This course will examine the ways in which contemporary literature and related art forms can respond to the various social tensions, historical questions and political conflicts inherent in the situation of crisis affecting Spanish society (as part of southern Europe) during the first two decades of the 21st century. The class will therefore study different novels, works of poetry, films, plays and digital narratives recently produced in Spain as they address different aspects of the historical experience of a economic, political and social "crisis." Some of the works that will be studied include: Alberto Méndez, LOS GIRASOLES CIEGOS; León de Aranoa, LOS LUNES AL SOL; Kirmen Uribe, BILBAO, NEW YORK, BILBAO; selections from Belén Gopegui, EL PADRE DE BLANCANIEVES ; José Luis Guerín, EN CONSTRUCCIÓN; Manuel Rivas, LA MANO DEL EMIGRANTE; Agustín Fernández Mallo, NOCILLA LAB; Alex de la Iglesia, LA COMUNIDAD). This is a writing-intensive course, which requires a minimum of 3 papers of approx. 4-5 pp. length, with rewrites; 50% of the grade must come from written work.

This course will explore the life and writings of the Mexican poet, intellectual, and cloistered nun, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648-1695). We will study her poetry, her dramatic works as well as her autobiographical writings. Special emphasis will be given to the cultural, literary and historical moment in which Sor Juana wrote, specifically as it pertained to her role as a woman writer in a masculine world. We will examine seventeenth-century Mexican convent culture and its role within the Church hierarchy, using it as a backdrop from which to study Sor Juana's polemical relationship with the ecclesiastical authorities. Also studied will be the viceregal society of which Sor Juana, although a cloistered nun, was an active part. We will also examine contemporary representations of Sor Juana in film, novel, poetry and other cultural manifestations.

| Description: | This course will be devoted to analyze a selection of texts produced in the Iberian Peninsula during the middle ages and the early modern period, whose principal subjects are the History and legends of the region that became, eventually, the kindom of Castile. This will be our point of departure to better understand the uses of the past, as it becomes part of a text, and goes through the unavoidable process of fictionalization. We will study, for example, the ever problematic relations between the nobility and the monarchy and the uses of History as a source of exemplary matter, as inspiration to help create and reinforce social identity, and as a way to overcome censorship. With the objective of acquiring a better understanding of the uses of the past as a strategy to comment, explain and try to modify the present moment, and given the popularity that the historical novel has acquired in Spain in recent years, especially after the transition to democracy, our reading list will also include a few examples of these types of texts. For their final projects, the students will be asked to work in a synchronic and comparative way, with various representations of a legend, a character, or a historical event of their choice. In Spanish. |

| Description: | The highly acclaimed and award-winning Cuban author Padura is known for his seven detective novels and many journalistic articles that deal with social and political issues in Cuba. We will read his works Fiebre de caballo, Pasado perfecto, Vientos de cuaresma, Máscaras, Paisaje de otoño, La novela de mi vida, Adios Hemingway, La cola de la serpiente, La niebla del ayer, El hombre que amaba los perros, and Herejes. These works will be studied using scholarship on Padura as well as sources used by Padura in his writing; special attention will be paid to his style, structure and inter-textual preferences in examining Cuba's social and historical conditions as he raises questions about values and character creation in ways reminiscent of Tolstoy, Dostoievsky, Galdos and Dickens. Students will present a report on one of the novels, and produce a research paper of 20-25 pages on a topic chosen in consultation with the professor. Prereq: Graduate Standing. In Spanish. |
