Desc: | This introductory level course will be discussion-based and will focus on the critical analysis of social problems as collectively defined and socially constructed. The course will discuss critical questions about social problems as both interactional and structural and will consider how the field of sociology came to consider social problems as a core area of research/study. Some key areas of social problems students will consider include wealth and economic inequalities, race, gender, sexuality, education, criminal justice, health, immigration, work, environment, and social change. The course will use an intersectional framework; students will learn how sociologists research social problems and how applied sociology addresses those findings. This course will be accessible for students who are new to sociology as a discipline and will be helpful for those preparing for the sociology requirements of the MCAT as well as preparation for the LSAT. |
