AMERICAN CULTURE STUDIES (L98)  (Dept. Info)Arts & Sciences  (Policies)SP2021

L98 AMCS 301TTopics in AMCS: Fake News: Pandemics, Power, and Propoganda3.0 Units
Description:The features of our crisis moment-- multiple global conflicts, a raging pandemic, contested elections, foreign and domestic influence campaigns, protests for justice reform, political tribalism, and the platforms which foster and augment the potency and reach of mis- and dis-information- -are current iterations of historical moments when definitions of what is true and real were sites of bitter contestations. We will look at historical moments of national crises to understand how information and the act of informing a citizenry are the crucible, lever, and bludgeon for propagating control of master narratives that define cultural imaginations then and now. By engaging with periods of uncertainty and fear in the American experience we will seek parallels with those who struggled to differentiate truth from propaganda when informational management was a central governmental priority for maintaining order and control. Disciplinary texts will draw from history, communication studies, sociology, American studies, and political science. Using archives (online and, if possible, in person), students will read widely from primary materials that offer insight on how people wrestled with and resisted the mediations of state power to define enemies, allies, criminals, and those worthy of justice. This course is part of AMCS's new program initiative on "COVID and Political Crisis in the American Experience." Students are encouraged to also preview and pair this course with Prof. Willow Mullins's course, "Culture & Identity: Of Cooties and COVID: Vernacular Understandings of Contagion" (L98 330C).

Home/Ident

A course may be either a “Home” course or an “Ident” course.

A “Home” course is a course that is created, maintained and “owned” by one academic department (aka the “Home” department). The “Home” department is primarily responsible for the decision making and logistical support for the course and instructor.

An “Ident” course is the exact same course as the “Home” (i.e. same instructor, same class time, etc), but is simply being offered to students through another department for purposes of registering under a different department and course number.

Students should, whenever possible, register for their courses under the department number toward which they intend to count the course. For example, an AFAS major should register for the course "Africa: Peoples and Cultures" under its Ident number, L90 306B, whereas an Anthropology major should register for the same course under its Home number, L48 306B.
