Desc: | Synchronous once a week FRANCE AND THE MUSLIM WORLD
France today has more Muslim citizens than any other country in Europe, which puts the country's relationship with Muslims, both within and beyond its borders, constantly in the news. Starting with Napoleon's invasion of Egypt, we will examine France's involvement in the affairs of Muslim countries; its presence in Egypt and Lebanon, and most notably its colonization of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, which had an irreversible effect on French culture today. We will also consider the cultural productions (literature, film, and art) of French people of Muslim origin. What futures become imaginable, when we see Muslims as an integral part of French culture? Assignments include writing for the general public and the creation of a StoryMap presentation in ArcGIS. Taught in English; French majors, minors, and others with the language encouraged to read the texts in the original as accessible. |
