GERMANIC LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES (L21)  (Dept. Info)Arts & Sciences  (Policies)SP2021

L21 German 4105Topics in German Studies: German Cinema & the Colonial Imagination3.0 Units
Description:The history of German Cinema has been shaped profoundly by the colonial imagination. Each film historic epoch attempted to shape its own image through the representation of a cultural other. In this undergraduate course, we will examine the film history of German speaking countries and how it was shaped by colonial history and colonialist imagery. Students will watch films from the Weimar period until the contemporary, they will learn about film analysis and interpretation, and they will practice writing in various genres of film criticism. We will discuss questions such as: How are non-European cultures represented and what is their ideological function? How do these representations reflect on German culture? How does colonial history and racism inform German cinema? What role do exoticism and orientalism play in the colonial imagination? What are the visual elements, techniques, and tropes that constitute this imagination of non-White cultures? Our discussions will be framed by readings in postcolonial theory and German colonial history. We will watch films by Reininger, Lubitsch, Murnau, Staudte, Herzog, Ottinger, and Link, among others. Readings will be mostly in German and the films will include English subtitles. Prerequisite: German 302D and German 340C/340D OR German 341/341D OR German 342/342D or permission of the Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Home/Ident

A course may be either a “Home” course or an “Ident” course.

A “Home” course is a course that is created, maintained and “owned” by one academic department (aka the “Home” department). The “Home” department is primarily responsible for the decision making and logistical support for the course and instructor.

An “Ident” course is the exact same course as the “Home” (i.e. same instructor, same class time, etc), but is simply being offered to students through another department for purposes of registering under a different department and course number.

Students should, whenever possible, register for their courses under the department number toward which they intend to count the course. For example, an AFAS major should register for the course "Africa: Peoples and Cultures" under its Ident number, L90 306B, whereas an Anthropology major should register for the same course under its Home number, L48 306B.
