Desc: | This particular section examines schools as social institutions that reflect the social, economic and political values of the culture of power. Utilizing sociocultural theory, we will deeply interrogate whether schooling is in fact a means for social mobility for all students, particularly those most marginalized by society. We will also examine themes such as the impact of resource access on teaching and learning experiences, how poverty and race shape educational opportunity, and the ways in which school and classroom interactions contribute to students' identity formation. Lecture, readings, and discussion are supplemented by film, actual classroom footage and visits to schools. |
