Desc:Topic Spring 2020: Entering the underground and underwater worlds, we will explore the cultural imaginary as a series of adventures that involve danger, technological prowess, and experimentation. As depicted by novelists, filmmakers, and explorers, the "world below" is a richly provocative space of crime, captivity, and also creativity. Reading excerpted texts by Hugo (LES MISERABLES AND LES TRAVAILLEURS DE LA MER), Verne (VINGT MILLE LIEUES SOUS LES MERS and LES INDES NOIRES), Zola (GERMINAL and LE VENTRE DE PARIS), and Laroux (LE FANTOME DE L'OPERA), we will uncover labyrinths and hidden spaces, aquatic wonders, and monstrous presences. Films by Painleve (LA PIEUVRE and LES AMOURS DE LA PIEUVRE), Cousteau (LE MONDE DU SILENCE), and Malle (ZAZIE DANS LE METRO) will unearth mysteries of both city and the sea. Drawings, photographs, and historical accounts of "the Paris World's Fairs" will bolster our study of how France in the 19th and 20th centuries was inextricably linked to hidden worlds.

Home/Ident

A course may be either a “Home” course or an “Ident” course.

A “Home” course is a course that is created, maintained and “owned” by one academic department (aka the “Home” department). The “Home” department is primarily responsible for the decision making and logistical support for the course and instructor.

An “Ident” course is the exact same course as the “Home” (i.e. same instructor, same class time, etc), but is simply being offered to students through another department for purposes of registering under a different department and course number.

Students should, whenever possible, register for their courses under the department number toward which they intend to count the course. For example, an AFAS major should register for the course "Africa: Peoples and Cultures" under its Ident number, L90 306B, whereas an Anthropology major should register for the same course under its Home number, L48 306B.
