RELIGIOUS STUDIES (L23)  (Dept. Info)Arts & Sciences  (Policies)SP2020

L23 Re St 479Senior Seminar in Religious Studies: Religion and Violence3.0 Units
Description:While religion is often regarded as a force for peace, goodwill, and safety in the world, it has historically fostered a great deal of destruction and suffering as well. Drawing from the interrelated disciplines of sociology, psychology, comparative religions, and history, this seminar examines fundamental questions about the relationship between religion and violence, such as: What motivates people to commit violent acts in the name of religion? Do people have an instinctual drive to destroy themselves and others (as once suggested by Sigmund Freud)? How is religiously motivated violence related to geopolitical realities (availability of resources, imperialism, nationalism, ethnic particularism)? Are some worldviews more prone to violence than others (e.g., monotheistic vs. polytheistic theologies)? How do people justify violence when their holy Scriptures also promote peace and mercy? Topics to be discussed include the psychology of happiness and discontentment, the "terrorist" label and its ideological functions, apocalypticism, holy wars, just-war theories, and pacifism. Reading and discussion promote reflection on our own values and learning to see the world through the eyes of others with whom we disagree. The seminar is required of all Religious Studies majors, with the exception of those writing an honors thesis. The class is also open, with the permission of the instructor, to other advanced undergraduate or graduate students.

Home/Ident

A course may be either a “Home” course or an “Ident” course.

A “Home” course is a course that is created, maintained and “owned” by one academic department (aka the “Home” department). The “Home” department is primarily responsible for the decision making and logistical support for the course and instructor.

An “Ident” course is the exact same course as the “Home” (i.e. same instructor, same class time, etc), but is simply being offered to students through another department for purposes of registering under a different department and course number.

Students should, whenever possible, register for their courses under the department number toward which they intend to count the course. For example, an AFAS major should register for the course "Africa: Peoples and Cultures" under its Ident number, L90 306B, whereas an Anthropology major should register for the same course under its Home number, L48 306B.
