POLITICAL SCIENCE (U25)  (Dept. Info)Continuing & Professional Studies  (Policies)SP2017

U25 PolSci 374American Foreign Policy3.0 Units
Description:This course examines the historical roots, content and conduct of contemporary US foreign policy. Decision-making is examined through the lens of competing ideologies about national security (isolationism versus interventionism, the US as responsible superpower versus the US as imperial actor), and competing theories (realism, liberalism, critical theory: feminist international relations, postcolonial theory anti-imperialism). We explore the parameters of American foreign policy in terms of its domestic decision making and policy instruments: the Constitution, the Presidency, Congress, the foreign policy establishment, think-tanks, bureaucracies, the media, public opinion, elections and interest groups. We review the historical roots of US foreign policy undertakings with an emphasis on the post World War II financial reconstruction of the global economy. We examine US relations with regional blocs around the world (the Middle East, the European Union, Japan, Russia, China, India, Africa, inter alia) in the context of "the war on terrorism", global competition over resources, competitor peers, human rights, globalization and inter-state organizations. Topics include bilateral and multilateral treaties, overt and covert military actions, the UN Security Council, NATO, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, arms control, missile defense, and human rights/international law policies. This course is fully online. Only University College students receive credit for online courses.

Home/Ident

A course may be either a “Home” course or an “Ident” course.

A “Home” course is a course that is created, maintained and “owned” by one academic department (aka the “Home” department). The “Home” department is primarily responsible for the decision making and logistical support for the course and instructor.

An “Ident” course is the exact same course as the “Home” (i.e. same instructor, same class time, etc), but is simply being offered to students through another department for purposes of registering under a different department and course number.

Students should, whenever possible, register for their courses under the department number toward which they intend to count the course. For example, an AFAS major should register for the course "Africa: Peoples and Cultures" under its Ident number, L90 306B, whereas an Anthropology major should register for the same course under its Home number, L48 306B.
