Desc:At least once a week there are seminars from researchers in ecology or evolution. These seminars are given by local people and by visitors. This semester there are also a number of presentations by job candidates. The point of these seminars is to learn about exciting research. What questions are they asking? What are they discovering? What new scientific stories can we hear about ecology or evolution? What makes up these fields anyway? The seminars are often followed by receptions which are a chance to get to know each other better and to ask questions. This course invites undergraduates to listen to these presentations and write about them. Required attendance at a minimum of 10 seminars. Small class. Seminar schedule available by contacting Patrick Clark(pclark@wustl.edu.) No final. Credit 1.0 units

Desc:Molecular Sociobiology: Social behavior is one of the most intricate and fascinating behaviors. Two major fields of research focus on the biology of social behavior: Sociobiology in which social behavior is studied in an ecological and evolutionary context (for example, the study of insect societies), and Social Neuroscience which focuses on the neuronal mechanisms regulating social behavior (mostly in humans and in model organisms such as mice and fruit flies). In recent years there has been significant progress in understanding the neuronal and molecular bases underlying social behavior as well as in research on the evolution of social behavior and animal societies. In this course, students will be engaged in critical reading of important and influential primary research articles that utilize neuronal, molecular, genetic, and genomic approaches to study fundamental questions in sociobiology and social neuroscience. Every week we will critically read one article; each article will be presented by a student that will also lead the discussion. The students are expected to attend all the classes and read all the articles. 2 units.

Home/Ident

A course may be either a “Home” course or an “Ident” course.

A “Home” course is a course that is created, maintained and “owned” by one academic department (aka the “Home” department). The “Home” department is primarily responsible for the decision making and logistical support for the course and instructor.

An “Ident” course is the exact same course as the “Home” (i.e. same instructor, same class time, etc), but is simply being offered to students through another department for purposes of registering under a different department and course number.

Students should, whenever possible, register for their courses under the department number toward which they intend to count the course. For example, an AFAS major should register for the course "Africa: Peoples and Cultures" under its Ident number, L90 306B, whereas an Anthropology major should register for the same course under its Home number, L48 306B.
