WRITING (L13)  (Dept. Info)Arts & Sciences  (Policies)FL2021

L13 Writing 432The Craft of Poetry: Modern and Contemporary Documentary Poetics3.0 Units
Description:The past twenty years has seen a resurgence in poetry collections that rely on text from court proceedings, news articles, books, and other sources. Robin Coste Lewis's "Voyage of the Sable Venus" includes a 79-page documentary poem, of the same title, solely comprised of language from art catalogues and museum titles, in an attempt to render a historical view of the Black female figure. In "Look," Solmaz Sharif relies on language from the Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms to question the cost of war and her family's position within those military interventions. Both Lewis and Sharif draw on a documentary poetry lineage largely shaped by Muriel Rukeyser. This course will center Rukeyser's "The Book of the Dead" (1938) as a central text to understanding how modern and contemporary practitioners, such as Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Mark Nowak, and Henk Rossouw, approach documentary poetry. Some questions we will attempt to answer include: What is the connection between documentary poetry and documentary photography and film? What similarities and differences exist between documentary poetry, poetry of witness, and conceptual work? What are the ways documentary poetry forces us to re-think or expand our understanding of what poetry is? Students will consider how their current poetic interests might be deepened by the form through discussion, presentations, and a final portfolio of documentary poems. PREREQS: Undergraduate students must have taken Writing 322 Poetry 2 to enroll. This course counts toward the Creative Writing Concentration.

Home/Ident

A course may be either a “Home” course or an “Ident” course.

A “Home” course is a course that is created, maintained and “owned” by one academic department (aka the “Home” department). The “Home” department is primarily responsible for the decision making and logistical support for the course and instructor.

An “Ident” course is the exact same course as the “Home” (i.e. same instructor, same class time, etc), but is simply being offered to students through another department for purposes of registering under a different department and course number.

Students should, whenever possible, register for their courses under the department number toward which they intend to count the course. For example, an AFAS major should register for the course "Africa: Peoples and Cultures" under its Ident number, L90 306B, whereas an Anthropology major should register for the same course under its Home number, L48 306B.
