L21 German 524Seminar in Literature of the Late 18th Century: Goethe's Faust3.0 Units
Description:This seminar is designed to acquaint students with the complete text of Goethe's Faust. Our reading and discussion of the drama will unfold against the backdrop of three distinct but interrelated contexts. 1) We will consider Faust from a literary-historical perspective, one that situates the work within Goethe's own literary oeuvre as well within the frameworks of eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century German literature more generally and of the long history of literary Faust adaptations (chapbook, Marlowe). 2) We will also approach Faust from an intellectual-historical perspective, attempting to understand how it engages with the key philosophical discussions and debates of the period during which it was written: the problem of evil (e.g. Leibniz), the limits of reason (e.g. Kant, Romanticism), and the legitimacy of the modern age (e.g. Hegel). 3) Finally, we will read a selection of more recent essays that seek to demonstrate how Faust sheds light on contemporary theoretical and scholarly pre-occupations, ranging from identity and transnationalism to remediation and material culture. One of the aims of the seminar is to expose students, on the basis of an exemplary case study, to a wide range of models of scholarly inquiry. Discussions will be supplemented with video of performances and other multi-medial adaptations of the Faust material.

Home/Ident

A course may be either a “Home” course or an “Ident” course.

A “Home” course is a course that is created, maintained and “owned” by one academic department (aka the “Home” department). The “Home” department is primarily responsible for the decision making and logistical support for the course and instructor.

An “Ident” course is the exact same course as the “Home” (i.e. same instructor, same class time, etc), but is simply being offered to students through another department for purposes of registering under a different department and course number.

Students should, whenever possible, register for their courses under the department number toward which they intend to count the course. For example, an AFAS major should register for the course "Africa: Peoples and Cultures" under its Ident number, L90 306B, whereas an Anthropology major should register for the same course under its Home number, L48 306B.
